The CHAMP FundsEach CHAMP Fund over the past 18 years has displayed certain common characteristics, especially with regard to geographic focus, investment style and strategy. Geographic FocusThe primary investment objective of CHAMP is to achieve long-term capital appreciation through privately negotiated equity and equity-oriented investments in businesses located in, or otherwise having a material portion of their business plan centering on, Australia and New Zealand. StrategyCHAMP prioritises private company investment opportunities and seeks to make equity-based control investments in the range A$50-A$100 million. This may include, under certain circumstances, investments in public companies. However, any such investments will only be made on the basis that CHAMP is able to use its equity ownership actively to participate in the company’s strategy and drive value creation, much the same as for a more typical private investment. Investment StyleCHAMP is a generalist firm that does not limit itself to specific sectors. It targets companies with strong market positions, predictable cash flows, sustainable competitive advantages and an opportunity for CHAMP to assist management in driving future improvement in earnings. Historically CHAMP has invested across many different sectors including food and beverage, consumer products, education, healthcare, media & technology, mining services, financial services, and transportation / distribution. These industries tend to have oligopoly type economics with expansion opportunities to larger offshore markets. Further details regarding each Fund are outlined below.
